Minerva's International Women's Day mix from last year was so good that we invited her back again this year to do it again. 2019's mix was a heady mix of experimental electronica, ambient, IDM and electro from her female peers and influences. This year, she's flipped the switch and went all in on the dark and deep techno. An hour full of bruising beats and wavy acid from some of the best producers out there.

Bricolage Podcast #43 - Minerva

Our March podcast is a special celebration of women in the electronic music scene and comes courtesy of Minerva. The Hungarian producer is using her platform, as one of our figureheads, on Bricolage to exhibit a mix of her female peers and influences and help raise awareness and support for gender parity in music and beyond.

"For me, IWD is always a very important day. It can sometimes feel like a constant uphill fight to be seen as an equal in the male dominated scenes of electronic music. However the balance is slowly shifting. The balance is key and we, as woman with creative drive, can and should expect to be given as much recognition for our contributions to the world of sound.

Fortunately, I have found a welcome home at Bricolage among some other very talented female musicians like Minimal_Drone*GRL, Bedless Bones, Sulevia and more. There, we are seen firstly and simply as producers and friends. There is no reference to male/female. We are all humans. Humans making music. Unfortunately, the music scenes I interact in my day to day life are sometimes not always as kind and welcoming. This landscape is slowly changing however. And ever year I feel big steps are being taken. This encourages me. I hope this continues and one day we have the equality we deserve."

Bricolage : Retcon (Phase Three)

On the 31st of August we mark our third anniversary as a label. In those three years we’ve worked with some fantastic artists and released what, we’d like to think is, some unique and special music along the way. 

To celebrate entering into our fourth year we’ve managed to pool together a mammoth 20 track compilation containing a mixture of 10 artists from our current roster and 10 artists that are new to the label. 

Titled “Retcon”, the compilation will be released on Friday the 31st August and as usual will showcase a wide variety of styles from the electronic sphere.

On Monday we revealed the first 5 current artists and on Tuesday we introduced the first 5 newcomers to the label. Tonight, we unveil the next 5 roster members to be featured on the release.

DARK FIDELITY HIFI

Sound engineer and producer extraordinaire, Rick Jones, is a vital cog behind the scenes at Bricolage in terms of promotion, distributing and mastering. But it's his expressions of sound through his Dark Fidelity HiFi project that garner the most recognition. His consistent creations of expansive and intriguing soundscapes know no bounds and he has written a brand new track exclusively for the "Retcon" release. Listen to "Hanasaku" below.

ALL BUTTONS IN

'All Buttons In' is another who has provided us with an exclusive track for the new album. Famed for his dark and deep mechanical creations, the Scottish producer has welded together a unique electronic piece in the form of "The Life and Death of a Neuron". We will be revealing that track soon.

MINERVA

"Minerva" is in the habit of making music with a distinctive edge. She's never been one to be afraid of venturing into abstract territories and her new track "Buzzkill" does exactly that. It twists and turns more than anything the Greece based Hungarian producer has ever concocted before. You'll be able to hear that track next week as we start the final build up to the new compilation album. For now though, let "Oligarch" (taken from "Vol 4" in winter 2016) works it's way into your ears...

We welcome back the hypnotic sounds of "No Arrival" on the anniversary compilation. His new track "Terra Ratio" is another dark and trippy slice of his own unique brand of quietly intense broken beat material. We'll be sharing that with you very soon.

His most recent release on Bricolage was the four track EP "The Chance To Fail". A whirlpool of sonic experimentation and slow burning techno tendencies.

Headroom 11 : Minerva presents "Founding Myths"

After a short break on the Headroom front we're back with a bang and a truly mesmeric and extensive mix session from Minerva. The Greek/Hungarian producer and DJ is in full on club mode as she takes you on a trip through some of the most recent additions to her expansive collection of music. There's an undeniably fresh feeling to the listening session due to the majority of the tracks being released this year. Minerva kicks off proceedings with a beautifully strange vocal piece from an unknown artist before launching into a rich variation of dancefloor ready house rhythms, stylistic melodic consistencies and plush pad swirls that are all laced with progressive tendencies. There's room for a flawless transition into some harder territory in the form of some grittier techno productions, although the overall deep vibe of the sounds on show remain at the core and then we find ourselves navigated back to the familiar hypnotic melodic elements from earlier but this time sandwiched in between them is some skewered rhythms, euphoric chords and lots of vocal cuts before we filter out of the mix on the same unknown acapella from the intro.

As Hallows Eve arrives again, this year, we’ve once more asked a few artists from the label to give us a Top 5 of their favourite creepy/eerie Halloween type songs for your blood curdling pleasure.

Arran Trax has provided us with a bunch of trick or treat dancing devils and one or two eerie soundscapes. Belial Pelegrim has given us a selection of some of his most ghoulish creations and collaborations. Whilst, Minerva, has selected her Top 5 skin crawling soundtrack excerpts. This song was my attempted to peak other people's interest and tell a bit of the tale in a soundscape format."

   "One of the sub-groups within the Sleepless Collective is the Darksiders. They were putting together a compilation playlist on Soundcloud of music written expressly for a 'Cabin in the Woods' tribute set that focused on "The Purge", where all the monsters in the glass rooms are unleased into the Facility. All of the tracks are rather amazing. Dismemberment Goblins was my choice and my track."

   "One of my good Soundcloud friends and collaborators is the very talented Roots Dubman. He sent me over some strange sounds that inspired me to produce this dark and foreboding, electro-horror track. The name came from Roots informing me that he started putting together his sounds after watching Rosemary's Baby alone in the dark."

   "This derge-like processional was inspired by books I was reading on animating inanimate objects with consciousness. Let's just say it's not a good idea to try this out at home.    "This film contains, like, two pieces of music at most but it works really well within the style and overall feel of the horror that is slowly unfolding.  'In Heaven' was written specifically for the film and it helps carry that feeling of intrigue and inevitability through to your ears as well as your eyes."

   "50 years old this year and it's still terrifying in it's own unique way. Feelings of unease linger all around and Mia Farrow adding vocals brings the creepy levels up."

   "This is essentially some jazz from the 1930's but the almost ridiculing nature and delivery, personally, make it very scary for me. It appeared in the film of the same name 70 years later and is heavily featured in many different styles and versions which only add to the eerieness!"

   "I have so much love for Asian horror and I am a bit of a human encyclopedia when it comes to Japanese films and soundtracks in particular. 'Kwaidan' was one of the very first horror film I ever saw and the avant garde theme tune startles me to this day still. So much silence in this one but when the warped use of traditional Japanese folk instruments make themselves known it brings with it a layer of suspense."

The second installment of our anniversary mixes comes from our very own Minerva. The Hungarian producer has put together some of her favourite experimental sounds from the labels back catalogue. Manchester based after party troupe "Quixotic" recently honoured Bricolage with a special mix consisting purely of material from our back catalogue. It spans a broad range of our techno infused releases and ranges from our early days to the present.

Autumn/Winter 2017

August was a relatively quiet month here at Bricolage HQ but we spent the end of summer working away behind the scenes to ensure that there's some real treats lined up for the remainder of the year. Unique podcasts, special guest mixes, two EPs plus the latest volume of our various artists compilation series. All that topped off with our most ambitious release to date in the form our first physical release.

SEPTEMBER
-----------------

To start off September we had Austin based sound design boffin, Devras Plexi, curate an hour of underground electronic gems from the underground. A unique selection of sounds from a unique talent. This particular podcast has proven to be one of our most popular yet. Listen for yourself below.

As we hit September, Bricolage enters into it's third year of existence. To celebrate this mini milestone we've got three special guest mixes lined up that take a look at a slice of our discography over the last two years.

For the first mix we got Manchester after party troupe "Quixotic" to mix together some of their favourite beat driven tracks from the label. They've been long time supporters of the label and have concocted a variety of tracks from our early days right through until the more current releases.



The second mix will come from Bricolage's own Minerva and explores the more experimental side of our catalogue before friend of the label, Kinoko, closes out the anniversary mixes with a presentation of some of our ambient works. Keep your eyes peeled for them as they drop.

To round off the month we have Oscurito returning behind the decks to provide us with our latest mammoth Headroom session. A two hour extravaganza awaits. The Glaswegian released his second EP on Bricolage in July. The "Eastern Philosophy" EP combined cinematic influences with Eastern tinged melodics and full bodied rhythms.

OCTOBER
--------------

In October we drop our very first physical release on Bricolage. Over the summer months we brought together an assortment of names from the roster to work on the "Dyadic" project, this collaboration album, consisting of 11 specifically made exclusive tracks, lands at the start of next month. The finished article is a melting pot of sounds from all over the electronic spectrum. This meeting of musical minds will be officially released on limited number CD and digital format on the 2nd of October.

We start off November with another double header. Glaswegian electronic experimentalist, Blue Notes, drops both his first podcast and standalone release for the label. Both are guaranteed to be sonic works of art.

Our last Headroom of the year will come in late November and is provided by the diverse mixing skills of Minerva. She followed up her 2016 "Oligarch" track on Bricolage with a rousing all vinyl podcast for us back in January this year. We're excited to give her free reign over the extended two hour timescale of Headroom before the year's out and you can fully expect a stellar journey with many a twist and turn.

DECEMBER

December kicks off with a podcast from the scarily consistent US producer, Belial Pelegrim. This is a man that is continually producing flawless and out there yet accessible music and we're sure his podcast will be in a similar vein. This is yet another mix that we're incredibly excited about landing in our inbox. It'll be that good.

Check out his phenomenal production skills on "Exoskeleton" which was released on Bricolage this summer.

We round off the year with Volume 6 of our Various Artists compilation where we'll once again be bringing plenty of new and intriguing sounds to your ears courtesy of more specially handpicked artists from around the world. Oscurito "Eastern Philosophy" (bc028)

Eighteen months on from the release of his "Octopus" EP at the start of 2016, Oscurito, returns to Bricolage with fresh ideas, new philosophies and a whole new production skill set. The "Eastern Philosophy" EP sees the Glaswegian indulge his ambient side that bit more. 'Kunoichi' opens things up with a buzzing, calming drone, sparse keys, sumptuous synth work and some stunning string sections that slowly engulf your headspace before 'The Nihon Shoki' slowly flutters into view with yet more string arrangements and synths. This time they come backed up with carefully selected and perfectly placed percussive elements and a humming bassline. Then the deep vocals of "Find Your Centre" introduce us to the most danceable track on the EP. Out goes the overall ambient side of things and back in come those trademark bulky basslines, sliding perc work and psychedelic melodies to form a big, truly Eastern flavoured tech house special. It's been a pleasure to watch the evolution of Oscurito over the past year and a half and there's way more to come from a producer who's just starting to find his own sound.

The EP comes backed up with two remixes of "Find Your Centre". the first is an electro flavoured take on things from Dreamland Fantasy. Keeping all the main ingredients of the original at the fore and adding his own elements to create a fresh and engaging remix.

Minerva chooses to go down a more progressive route by manipulating the original percussion into her own bustling style and letting things slowly evolve in a repetitive and hypnotic fashion that harks back to the early days of that old school prog house feel of 2000's. Big kicks at the forefront to really drum things home.

Bricolage Podcast #17 : Minerva

Our first podcast of 2017 is brought to you by the electronic enchantress, Minerva. She has dipped into her extensive record collection (promos and all) and pulled out a bundle of captivating tracks to set us off on the right path. On the surface there's abstract sounds, cut up synths, unusual industrial soundscapes and biting techno. Bubbling away underneath it all is an experimental heart that continues pumping out fuzzy, filtered electronics and raw noise.

In The Loop : Episode 16

Episode 16 of "In The Loop" has a look at the first half of artists from our most recent compilation release, Volume 4. The post covers ground on some of their recent work and what the future has in store.

First up is Dark Fidelity Hi Fi. Just prior to featuring on the Bricolage compilation, DFHF released the track "Third Eye Projections". A spiraling, glitched out dub effort that's awash with neat melodies and percussion. Check out the anti-corporate visual accompaniment below the track and be sure to pop over to the DFHF bandcamp if you want a copy.

The last track to appear on the Bedless Bones soundcloud page was "Foreign Blood Heat", which is the track featured on the Bricolage release but a further browse through the profile will throw up some dark, vocal infused electronics that are a treat for any industrial heads. Our personal favourite is the demo of "Wicked Sprouts" which you can listen to below.



Did you know that, Kadri Sammel, the girl behind the Bedless Bones project is also a member of long running Estonian industrial band "Forgotten Sunrise"? The duos most recent release was the single "Guardian Curtains", which you can find over on their bandcamp.

Ix Prospectum has been gearing up for his upcoming full length album release on Bricolage in January by unveiling some of the tracks that are set to make the cut. Over on his Soundcloud page you'll find a plethora of unearthed, wonderfully scatterbrained gems including the epic "Disable It" and the jittery ambiance of "I Want Changed Myself".

Roman Fahls latest offering is the ambient techno excursion, "Iberia". It's yet more flawless production work from a producer clearly on top of his game at the moment. A precise build up slowly lets a gorgeous vocal bleed though before a thumping kick drum take over followed soon after by more intricate percussion. A classic piece of work.

Guido has recently been teasing his listeners with a trio of short snippets and previews over on his Soundcloud page.







Scroll a little further down his songs and you'll find "Just A Dream". An electronic foray into dancefloor subconsciousness. A beautiful introduction is promptly backed up with solid percs and and wavy, catchy sequences that bounce playfully along. A track that's equally at home in your headphones as it is in the club.

Kold47 only has a handful of tracks online with uncompromising lo-fi techno being his weapon of choice. Any fans of his "Koldstruktion" track that appeared on our compilation will lap up that distinct raw, bass throbbing feel of his latest track "Untitled". No nonsense, straight off the bat pounding techno rhythms.



"Sectarian Religions", a slighty older track, sees the producer turn the acid charm offensive up to 10 with dark pads and drums nestling in at the back of a vibrating but solid acid line.

Greek/Hungarian producer Minerva just recently uploaded a fresh slab of fizzing beats and resonating patterns in the form of new track "The Sultans Robe". Drawing on influences including breaks, trance and techno the drum work is a hybrid effort that crosses over many genres with substantial style. Never letting up from it's 140bpm until the last second.

Today we released Volume 4 of our various artists compilation project and it's another selection of, unique and eclectic, producers hand picked from across the globe coming together on one release that's brimming with a collection of intriguing and engaging sonic adventures. Each track plays its own important part as an individual component but also flourishes as part of the bigger picture in what proves to be a captivating digital landscape. A spectrum of melodies, immersive textures and an assortment of rhythms that drift between electronic experimentation, flat out techno, glitch movements, drum n bass and back again. The journey starts off with some vivid, trippy dub and dark ambient before moving into more beat based territory and a deep, woozy, resonating hybrid of bustling electronica, ambient techno, IDM and some rigid lo-fi tech frequencies. There's a diversion off path in the form of drum n bass before the trip continues and we leap into the most substantial experimental part full of intelligent drum work and dense, unpredictable musical sketches that collide into one another before finishing on a warped, techno/electronica composition.

48. ROMAN FAHLS



Intricately weaving together influences of techno and ambient electronic music, Roman Fahls works to create a sound that generates as much pleasure on headphones as it does on the dancefloor. His is music for the mind and feet.

49. DARK FIDELITY HI FI



DFHF are underground, Mancunian record producer, Rick Jones, and several guest players. The DFHF style incorporates mixing and recording all formats of sound from a varied selection such as 90's loungecore to dark trap and dub to lofi groove all with absorbing and curious textures. Each track stands out and provides an individual, engaging experience. The debut album "Dub Tests and Sky Pop Transmissions" was released last year on DIY Manchester label, Soundwaves Here We Come followed by a 6 track EP this year, "No Wave Control Manual". DFHF are settling into somewhat of a creative roll and we're glad to have them continue regular output as part of the new compilation.

50. MINERVA



Minerva is the alias of Ariadne Vinerma. A young, female electronic producer of half Greek, half Hungarian heritage. She has released music on many local labels since her teens. Up until recent times her releases and sounds were focused on a heavier, industrial palette but as of late her style has taken a more experimental approach. The techno side of things still remains but there's a more playful and melodic edge to some of the tracks. This new direction is evident by the different stylings over on brand new "Minerva" Soundcloud page.

51. RA1N



Rain is the musical vehicle of 29 year old Alex from Russia. His output falls mainly under the drum n bass and ambient categories but he takes influence from a vast array of performers in the electronic world and beyond. Citing the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Chemical Brothers and Depeche Mode as just a few of his most cherished childhood vinyl memories. His taste in drum n bass is also exquisite with artists such as London Elektricity, Fanu, Sunchase and Electrosoul System name dropped among his favourites. For Alex, it's not just making his own music that's a hobby but also creating stories through his popular mixes. His "Ambient Hour" episodes on Mixcloud are full to the brim with dowtempo and chilled out drum n bass gems.
