Bricolage Podcast #16 : Figurate

Figurate takes the driving seat for our last podcast of 2016 and has supplied an hour of glitch harmonics and off kilter beats combined with some beautifully serene moments. We start off with a classic BoC remix before the journey then proceeds to swing with ease between both sides of the pendulum. There are moments of lush melodies and intricate pattern work that are effortlessly counteracted by weird, leftfield electronics, some damage proof bass music and a whole heap of angular sonics. Crisp, shifty structures remain throughout the backbone of this curious mi that never misses a trick. Essential listening for any experimentalists and beyond.

Bricolage Podcast #15 : International Debris

Almost exactly a year on from creating our first "Headroom" mix, International Debris returns to Bricolage on mixing duties with our November podcast. We welcome that unique, I.D, taste and style back with open arms. Effortlessly bridging that gap between autumn and winter with dollops of vaporwave, beautifully structured ambient pathways, powerful soaring synths and intelligent, intricate electronics. Headroom 06 : Bricolage presents "Hallowmas"

We promised you a treat in time for Halloween and it comes in the form of our latest volume in the Headroom mix series. A few of the artists on our label have came together to provide what can only be described as a turbulent vortex and sound collage of dark techno, eerie ambient soundscapes, unsettling sound bytes, alternative Halloween tracks, chaotic, twisted noise and disturbing electronic scenes all spliced together with excerpts from some famous horror films. How many can you spot?

It's a journey you could use to soundtrack a party or if you feel like giving yourself a scare then sit back, look out the monkey nuts and toffee apples and press play. But be warned, it'll creep up on you when you're least expecting it.

There's hopefully something for everyone in the mix. It ranges from A Perfect Circle to Aphex Twin, Blawan to Burial Hex, Marilyn Manson to Shackleton and soundtrack work from Interview With The Vampire.

Bricolage Podcast #14 : Alpha Skies

Our October podcast is a trip down nostalgia lane in more ways than one. Putting aside the favoured and modern methods of overlapping tracks and mixing one into another, Alpha Skies, has instead given us a short half an hour mix in the most traditional form possible. Its an old school style mixtape session, some of his favourite tracks from his memories of being in dancehalls as a child alongside a few more modern selections and a few of his own 80s and 90s inspired electro creations and edits. It's littered with catchy synth stabs, soul type vocals and sweet 909 work. Put all those elements together and you have a school disco type vibe running throughout and an overall nostalgia soaked, feel good, sentimental listen. It's like summer never ended.

Bricolage Podcast #13 : First Anniversary Special

Our September podcast is a very special mix. Last month marked the birth of the Bricolage net label and collective. The label was officially launched on the 9th of August 2015 and on the 31st of August we put out our debut release, "bc001". It was a compilation that set the tone and lay down a marker for the broad palette of sounds that we've shared with you over the past 12 months. Its tracklisting is made up of unique artists from all around the world that covered a vast amount of styles in the field of electronic music. Ambient, dub, experimental, glitch, house and techno sounds are all on display. This particular podcast session provides you with that full compilation from start to finish in a continuous gapless mix put together by label head, Fragile X.

It's a dip into the archives of the label and looks back at our beginnings.

Bricolage Podcast #12 : futurendeavours

Our last podcast of the summer sees Glasgow duo 'futurendeavours' steer you into an hour of grinding, visceral electronics. It's a provocative assembly of sounds. Almost apocalyptic at times but a thrilling listen throughout. The trip starts with a 5 minute long, experimental industrial soundscape and once you work your way through that you're rewarded with a non stop, high octane electronic voyage. Prepare for an onslaught of energetic drum n bass, robot music, futuristic breaks, complex percussion movements and unfathomable and unforgiving rhythms. In among the chaos there's also the first chance to hear the full version of "Bruxism", a 10 minute slab of dubstep and breakbeat infused techno that the Glaswegians are releasing on Bricolage this autumn.

Bricolage Podcast #11 : Gregor Garnutsi

Our July podcast is possibly our most eclectic and varied session yet. It comes from the imagination of Gregor Garnutsi. Interchangeable beats and tones, ambient gems, portions of jazz, solo sections, blobs of techno, an acid shower, old school breaks, excerpts of the custom music scale known as the Colundi Sequence and even a bit of Queen. You'd be forgiven for thinking that these sounds wouldn't mesh well and that things could go awry but you'd also be wrong. It's chaos but it's organised chaos at it's finest. Everything is fused together at the perfect junctions, making this podcast a mind bending but insanely enjoyable journey. A musical transcript full of dips, dives, tranquility and bedlam. Garnutsi himself describes it as "summer chill for a lucid dreamers thrill".

Bricolage Podcast #10 : Roy Or Bison?

'Roy Or Bison?' previously mixed and curated Vol 2 of our Headroom mixes in January of this year. It was a two hour mix full of a variety of musical twists and turns. Quiet and loud. Light and heavy. This time out for our June podcast he's laid out a format of moody rhythms, rare tracks, new tracks and abstract electronic sculptures mixed in with a few classics, edits and samples. It's a live mix, unplanned, with no set tracklist in mind and tracks that were merely picked on the spot. It merges together into one dewy, mercurial journey full of obscure but accessible music.

Headroom 04 : Leit Motif presents "Apnea"

Leit Motif takes the helm for Headroom Volume 4 and provides us with a special mix that he's titled "Apnea". This otic experience is doused in translucent sounds that layer perfectly into each other in the most subtle of ways. Cushioned noises are backdropped into a collage of drones, ambience, whispered vocals and dreamlike atmospherics. The tone of the mix is set early on and it slowly unfurls and rebuilds itself in beautiful and intricate stages. The textures, fragments of sounds and shimmering, fragile elements used to create this headphone journey make it feel like time slows down when you're caught up in it. And lets be honest, it's always nice to slow down every once in a while.

Bricolage Podcast #9 : Willy

Teenage techno producer and Edinburgh native, Willy, has delivered a raw slab of unforgiving and uncompromising techno for our May podcast. Dark tones skewered together with shadowy rhythms and sounds are the main elements on show and in turn they create a very nocturnal feel to the mix. It stomps and pounds its way through the speakers in an almost mechanical fashion, stopping occasionally for very brief pauses and breakdowns that lure you in before the beats and bass simply leap back out at you again. It's full to the brim with a solid techno groove alongside a dark danceability and underground track selections that conjure up images of a smokey basement party. This is definitely a mix for the later hours and preferably played at full volume.

Bricolage Podcast #8 : Fragile X

Label head Fragile X is back on podcast duty this month. It's another sonically aesthetic mix that twists and turns it's way through your eardrums. It kicks off with an array of unobtrusive sounds and layers that fuse elements of ambient, progressive breaks and futuristic sounds before diving off the deep end and into some faster paced breakbeats and complex rhythms with a darker tone. The sonic and experimental side of things remains at the forefront for the duration with the drops of ambience and unique breakdowns remaining littered throughout creating a slightly frenetic but always harmonious second half of the mix that slides and swerves among all sorts of dynamic textures. The result is an expansive mix that provides an introspective into the eclectic world of electronic music.

Bricolage Podcast #7 : Sunn Boo

It's the first Monday of the month and that means it's time for a new podcast. Our March mix is from young French DJ and producer "Sunn Boo". There's no beating about the bush on this one. It's a certified slammer. An hour of pure beat driven music. Raw sounds and sequences expertly chained together and moulded into a barnstorming collage of techno and house. There's barely a pause for breath. Solid and weighty drums provide a murky background for squelchy rhythms and resonant progressions. Dense in parts and floaty in others, it's the perfect start to our week that has us wishing the weekend would get here that little bit sooner already. Sunn Bo has produced a mix that could be just as much at home in a club as it is in your headphones. Rhythmic music from start to finish. Enjoy.

Bricolage Podcast # 6 : Chairman Cow

Our February podcast is here and it's an old school mixtape style compilation from Chairman Cow. The kind of mix that proves you don't have to be a DJ or have DJ equipment to make a mix. Just music stitched together as close to the old fashioned way as you can get. It's an hour of classics spreading through the styles of post-punk, early electronic work, art pop, new wave and more. Pop sensibilities prevail on each track and there's touches of funk and some avant garde stuff littered throughout the mix. The choice of music spans over many different decades gone by but still manages to sound fresh. The Chairman has even thrown in a few of his own tracks and his unique covers of Pump Up The Jam and Blue Monday for good measure. All in all this particular podcast is a retro boogie for the brain.

Bricolage Podcast #5 : Oscurito

Happy New Year to all our readers and listeners! We're back with a bang to start off the year and 2016 begins with a journey to the cosmos. Our first podcast of the year comes from up and coming Glasgow producer "Oscurito". It's a mix full of celestial melodic elements and magnetic beats as he invites you to hop on board his spaceship for a trip to the stars and beyond. Strap yourself in and allow Oscurito to take you on a guided tour of his musical galaxies. It's overflowing with space themed atmospherics and if you allow it into your head it conjures up images of the deep, dark but colourful, thermosphere. Clocking in at just under an hour, it provides dark electronic patterns and techno rhythms that will keep your feet and mind on the go.

Bricolage Podcast #4 : get-effect

Our December podcast comes via the unique music tastes of Glasgow's own "get-effect". As has been the case with our 3 previous podcasts, this one is, again, VERY different. Here, the lines between electronic music and guitars are expertly blurred into one completely mesmerizing escapade. A truly hypnotic sound collage that's absolutely glazed in melody. There's a nod to certain parts of the 80's with some of the hooks included in here and the mix as a whole has a warm feel of nostalgia to it. It's drenched in retro synths and beats. It dips into the past to include tracks from some 30 years ago but it's never in danger of getting over sentimental and brings some electronica from the current music music climate into the fold. There's even music from the future with unreleased material from "get-effect" included. Electronica, shoegaze elements, synthwave galore, even a Miami Vice theme remix and a twist in the tail at the end with a short blast of techno as a fitting send off.

I fondly recall asking "get-effect" if he would be up for contributing a podcast for the collective and his reply was a resounding yes. He then stated that he "could make ambient mixes until the cows come home" but that he also enjoys DJing and asked if that (ambient) is what I was after or if there was any certain style I was looking for. My reply was that there's no boundaries, no style limit but that the Bricolage podcast is simply all about reflecting the artists tastes and influences in an hour. It's safe to say he more than hit the mark on that front.

The best way to describe this mix is to say that if "get-effect" was in charge of compiling the soundtrack to the movie "Drive" then you might have ended up with something like this. High but worthy praise.

Headroom 01: International Debris presents "Dream Machine"

Our previous post informed you what Headroom was all about. If you missed it then here's the quick gist of it. Headroom is a new bi-monthly mix series that provides our artists with a two hour musical canvas to take listeners on a headphone trip.



The first in our series is a real coup for us. It comes from International Debris and is a melting pot of ambient, vaporwave, Berlin School, new age, sky music and outsider house. Headroom

"Headroom" is a new mix series that we're starting up here at Bricolage. Our monthly podcast will still be our priority mix series but "Headroom" will run on a bi-monthly rota and will promise to add a special touch to our ever expanding catalogue of top quality mixes.

The aim of "Headroom" is to give the artist an extra hour to provide a deep, deep journey for our listeners. The mixes will be 2 hour sessions with free reign to the artist to express themselves however they please. It's going to make for some exciting mixes.

Bricolage Podcast #3 : Subsequent

Our November podcast is the 3rd in our series and comes from Subsequent. Somewhat of a veteran when it comes to mixing, with 15 years experience behind him, Subsequent has the ability to switch effortlessly between any style and sound. Here, on his Bricolage podcast, he provides the perfect soundtrack to transition us all from autumn into winter. A mix for when the trees start to really wilt, when daylight seems to get even shorter and the nights seem even longer. Subsequent has given us clicking drum beats, hissing machines and a slightly mechanical, industrial ambience. Experimental sounds, samples and clever textures that creak through the atmosphere and into our headspace. It completely washes over us and brings some unexpected sounds into the equation before providing a more sleepier and warmer palette to round things off. This particular podcast a slow, extensive and almost quiet excursion through the dark and towards the morning light. Perfect.

Bricolage Podcast #3: Subsequent by Bricolage Collective on Mixcloud

Here's a little bit about the mix from Subsequent himself:

"I'm always on the look out for new vinyl that I can play on the dancefloor and in my quest to find them I ended up coming across a lot of the records I used in this mix. I've always had a secret love affair with ambient and the glitchier, click based side of things. What appeals to me most in these kind of tracks is the space, the depth and the room for reverb in them. There's some mischievous sounds and a lot of muggy build ups and intros. A lot of the tracks are maybe a bit older but I still think they're more than relevant."

Subsequential Effect

Our debut podcast from Lo-Jacker, in September, and the follow up, from Fragile X, for the month of October were both received very well online. It's a pleasure to announce that we have our next two podcasts lined up to take us to the end of the year.

Our next podcast is recorded and good to go for release on the 2nd of November. It comes courtesy of "Subsequent", our Rotterdam native, who has been in the mixing game for 15 years and has served up a real audio treat for next month. It's a special mix indeed and one that you and your headphones will truly appreciate. You'll have to wait till November to wrap your ears around it though!

Our December podcast is penciled in for the 1st of that month and will come from "get-effect". Knowing what he's capable of producing, I have no doubt that it will bring our podcast series to a fitting ending for 2015 and provide the platform for a big year ahead for the Collective in 2016.

Now, while his previous mixes online point towards an ambient side, there's a lot more to his musical make up than that so expect a potential curve ball..... Either way, his December podcast is sure to be another worthy addition to our mix series.
