Bricolage Showcase

Last week we posted about our friend and label supporter Mark Shields reaching 100 episodes of his Monday Graveyard radio show/podcast. A real milestone and a gem of a show to go with it. Episode 101 of the Monday Graveyard is also a very special episode as far as Bricolage is concerned. Mark very kindly gave us the opportunity to have a full hour to ourselves....

We're proud to be able to present a mix made up exclusively of music from our members. It's an hour that consists of just some of the unique music that we've released in our first 6 months. It manages to encapsulate what the label and collective is all about. A diverse selection spanning the electronic genres. The hour long show was curated and mixed by, label head, Fragile X and features some of his own music alongside Subsequent, Kure, Intl. Debris, Hiramatsu Toshiyuki, Slow Deep Breath, get-effect, The Next Commuter, Roy Or Bison?, Oscurito and H.ICH. There's ambient, vaporwave, some dub, shoegazed tinged electronics, glitch, drones, darkness, guitars and, of course, what better way to round it off then some techno.

Earlier this week, our podcasts/mixes found a new home for storage and download. We're now using "hearthis" as our primary download source in place of podomatic. It's an easier interface for both uploaders and listeners to navigate through and there's no storage limit. As always, any podcasts and mixes will still originally be uploaded to our mixcloud account for streaming and two weeks after release the mixes will be available for free download on "hearthis". We're looking forward to giving you the opportunity to download and take our mixes on the go with you once more.

Bricolage Podcast #4 : get-effect

Our December podcast comes via the unique music tastes of Glasgow's own "get-effect". As has been the case with our 3 previous podcasts, this one is, again, VERY different. Here, the lines between electronic music and guitars are expertly blurred into one completely mesmerizing escapade. A truly hypnotic sound collage that's absolutely glazed in melody. There's a nod to certain parts of the 80's with some of the hooks included in here and the mix as a whole has a warm feel of nostalgia to it. It's drenched in retro synths and beats. It dips into the past to include tracks from some 30 years ago but it's never in danger of getting over sentimental and brings some electronica from the current music music climate into the fold. There's even music from the future with unreleased material from "get-effect" included. Electronica, shoegaze elements, synthwave galore, even a Miami Vice theme remix and a twist in the tail at the end with a short blast of techno as a fitting send off.

I fondly recall asking "get-effect" if he would be up for contributing a podcast for the collective and his reply was a resounding yes. He then stated that he "could make ambient mixes until the cows come home" but that he also enjoys DJing and asked if that (ambient) is what I was after or if there was any certain style I was looking for. My reply was that there's no boundaries, no style limit but that the Bricolage podcast is simply all about reflecting the artists tastes and influences in an hour. It's safe to say he more than hit the mark on that front.

The best way to describe this mix is to say that if "get-effect" was in charge of compiling the soundtrack to the movie "Drive" then you might have ended up with something like this. High but worthy praise.

No One Leaves Here Empty Handed

Last night our YouTube channel officially launched with the premiere of a music video for "No One Leaves Here Empty Handed" by get-effect.



The music of "get-effect" as a whole has a real natural, open and intrinsic feel to it and this particular track is a stand out among his work. Chiming guitars, big synths and a steady beat. The video and imagery fits in snugly alongside those audio elements to create a beautiful all round body of work. A perfect audio/visual coming together of electronic tinged, chilled out, shoegaze and beautifully shot nature collages.

It's an uplifitng audio/visual combination that we're proud to be able to share with you as our first official upload.

There's waaaaaay more to come.

Subsequential Effect

Our debut podcast from Lo-Jacker, in September, and the follow up, from Fragile X, for the month of October were both received very well online. It's a pleasure to announce that we have our next two podcasts lined up to take us to the end of the year.

Our next podcast is recorded and good to go for release on the 2nd of November. It comes courtesy of "Subsequent", our Rotterdam native, who has been in the mixing game for 15 years and has served up a real audio treat for next month. It's a special mix indeed and one that you and your headphones will truly appreciate. You'll have to wait till November to wrap your ears around it though!

Our December podcast is penciled in for the 1st of that month and will come from "get-effect". Knowing what he's capable of producing, I have no doubt that it will bring our podcast series to a fitting ending for 2015 and provide the platform for a big year ahead for the Collective in 2016.

Now, while his previous mixes online point towards an ambient side, there's a lot more to his musical make up than that so expect a potential curve ball..... Either way, his December podcast is sure to be another worthy addition to our mix series.

In The Loop : Episode 1

"In The Loop" is a new section that we're starting up that will keep you up to date with what our members are up to inside and outside of the collective.

First things first, our debut podcast, that came courtesy of Lo-Jacker at the start of the month, is now available for a free download. It was previously only available for streaming at our mixcloud account. But as of today you can stream AND download it over at our new podomatic account. The same process will be in place for our future podcasts. They'll spend a week or two being exclusive to mixcloud and will then become available for DL at podomatic.

Our resident French techno wizard H.ICH has been busy creating more beats recently. A few weeks ago he dropped a new track of his "Holy Tresor" over on his soundcloud page. Anybody that knows of or has been to Tresor nightclub in Berlin will know what to expect from the title alone......ferocious, dark, relentless techno.



There's also a neat remix cut from A6DE that's been doing the rounds over the last few days.



Both tracks are more than worth a listen.

get-effect has also been quite busy recently. He's just released a new EP called "Trick Ladders" on Vanguardista Records. It's a journey into his take on the krautrock side of things. Think precision timing riffs and beats bathed in ambient synths. You can get a copy of the 5 track EP here.

Jazz Defector has always had a very prolific output and recent times have been no different than his usual standards. His soundcloud page is choc-a-bloc with some new ambient gems. The last 3 weeks has saw him release chapters 4, 5 and 6 of his "Lost In Silence" experiments among a few other newbies.

Volume 1 VA: A Colourful Storm (Part 1)

 So, as mentioned in the previous post, my friend Emma came up with the idea of drawing her own visual interpretations of all the tracks that made up our first release.

Armed with a notepad and pastels her task was to quickly sketch down the vibe she got from each track in the allocated time slot, which was each individual track length, sometimes played twice in the case of the shorter tracks. It's worth noting that Emma knew absolutely nothing about any of the tracks or artists, had never heard even one second of any given track and just subsequently went with the flow. The results vary from colourfully abstract to sometimes almost childlike efforts to near blank pages with splashes of colours sporadically placed. Below I'll post the first 8 songs along with their corresponding drawings. Click the images for a bigger viewing.

BRICOLAGE: VA: Volume 1 (bc001)

Yesterday saw the release of our first compilation. Various Artists Volume 1. Major thanks go out to all the artists who contributed for making this release happen so quickly.

Volume 1 more than represents what the collective is all about. It's full to the brim with a wealth of music from the world over. Sounds from Japan, Denmark, Scotland, England, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Holland, France and Sweden are all on show here. There's no bias against genre. Just a collection of quality and eclectic music for your listening pleasure.

The compilation covers a diverse range of ambient, glitch, techno, house, drone and experimental sounds. Hopefully there's something for everybody among the 16 tracks. As will always be the case, the compilation is a free to stream and download from the Bricolage bandcamp page.

11. GET-EFFECT



Glasgow native, get-effect, was one of the first artists we contacted. He makes tranquil music that defies any real genre. Operating out of a quiet room overlooking the waves, get-effect uses guitars, synths and pedals to create tones which are then tweaked, stretched and reappropriated into musical forms that are steeped in shoegaze, electronica and ambient influences. Housed in a modern kind of ambience, the music self-consciously soars and falls on its nostalgic journey through the Creation, Warp, Ghostly & Morr LP's that sit on his shelves.

12. KOREAN WEST HILL

Korean West Hill is the alias of German producer, Leon. Born in Munich, he spent his childhood there and then moved to Madrid where he spent his teenage years before returning to Germany and Berlin to study politics in 2014. He has been musically inclined for almost his whole life. Playing piano from the ages of 6-12 before moving on to guitar at the age of 14 and a year later started composing electronic music. He is also able to play the ukulele, saxophone, bass and drums. This musicianship coupled with his German-Spanish influences makes for a very intriguing producer.

13. MICROVOLT



Microvolt is a music project from Paul Randall. He composes using quite a lo-fi set up and it is a completely ambient project. He creates tracks that are very easy to get lost in. In his own words..."A pursuit of beauty and an expression of inner feelings for the most part." Microvolt has collaborated with Jazzdefector in the form of the ambient band Ghost Signals and also with Jules Straw of Pinklogik both as Microvolt and as Teslacoil321. There's also the added bonus of an experimental ambient project called blueonsilver. Paul also hosts a weekly radio show on Sheppey FM called "Bluetown Electronica".

14. GEWATTE



Gewatte is a Swedish producer based in Berlin. He keeps himself to himself and prefers to let his music do the talking. He describes himself as having little or no affection for clean or polished sounds and instead prefers abrasive, acidic, hard hitting techno as his weapon of choice. His particular take on electronic music has been described as "Music for the alleys of Neo Tokyo and the dungeon raves of Zion." Take from that what you will! Loud and in your face but, more importantly, good music.
