Bricolage Podcast #59 - See Blue

We've managed to procure a very special guest for our July podcast session. We've coaxed Matthew Duffield (of Sedition DJs fame) out of an extended mix hiatus.

Matthew is head of the, Barcelona based, See Blue Audio imprint. An ambient leaning label that focuses on "shade rather than light". The label is still in its infancy but is slowly growing and evolving its roster.

This mix, as you can imagine, is rooted in the ambient genre. Over the course of 80 mins we are taken on a journey that showcases the broad depth of the genre. The beats are few and far between but when they do make an appearance they make an impact. There's glistening synths, peaceful guitar soundscapes, layers of field recordings, ethereal vocals, segments of haunting world/ethnic music and it's all topped off with sounds from over a century ago via the year 1919. The session is cut together like a vintage mixtape for added appeal. One for the headphones.

As always, you can listen below or at our mixcloud.

Minimal Drone GRL "Ancestral Origins" (bc054)

Bricolage is proud to present the debut album from Canadian sound sculptor, Joanne O'Keeffe aka Minimal Drone GRL.

"Ancestral Origins" is an ambient opus that is full to the brim with colourful and alluring melodies, emotive pads, effective rhythms and a vast array of field recordings recorded throughout the UK and Canada. These field recordings and found sounds blend in with the organic atmosphere to create a memorable and captivating journey.

This stunning ninety minute story is soaked in nostalgic tones and plays out like a fairy tale of sorts as Minimal Drone GRL casts her spell and weaves a golden web of immersive surround sound ambience. At once, both mystical and relatable. We'd highly recommend listening to "Ancetsral Origins" in one sitting to truly experience and appreciate the full story.

The theme of the album is rooted deep in the heart of British Columbia as past meets present and both look to the future together....

"The concept or theme for the album is based on what it was like to be brought up by immigrant parents and the challenges and hardships they faced arriving in a foreign country. Each individual track represents exploration, self discovery and learning about my roots/ancestry in Britain and growing up in British Columbia. The 'Spirit of Kolus' track pays homage to the indigenous people/First Nations of Canada and the beauty of their culture and heritage."

Lying Cat "Second Life" (bc052)

The return of the Lying Cat brings both a continuation and evolution of the sounds that were showcased on the evasive felines debut EP back in 2018. That warm and grainy fuzzy feeling remains embedded in the atmosphere, as does the curious nostalgic charm that each arrangement seems to possess.

The track structures are still unorthodox but this time they come supplemented with more depth, tone and character. There is a huge array of textures throughout 'Second Life' that are complimented by fractured patterns, moments of melodic bliss and electronic chaos that are all topped off with an exceptional aura of mystery.

"Second Life" is available to stream and DL below or at bandcamp

Yasda "Spektrum" (bc051)

The world of Yasda is a curious place. The Hungarian producer has a knack for making peculiar structures and sounds feel familiar through the use of organic elements and found sound. This unique and unusual outlook on composing makes for perplexing rhythms, frayed textures and dynamic, playful, timbres that stumble around like musical dice. Everything feels impulsive. Always in motion. Never sitting still. "Spektrum" is controlled chaos with an eccentric heart.

Belial Pelegrim "Imitation Of Faith" (bc050)

For our milestone 50th release we have electronic wizard, Belial Pelegrim, conjure up a mystical offering of dark matter, transportive soundscapes and sense altering sonic environments via his unique musical vision, tangled textures and layers of warped sound design.

There's elements of experimental IDM, cinematic scores and crunchy electronica as the California based producer maintains his self described 'electro-organic' aesthetics throughout.

"Imitation of Faith" unfolds like a story, a twisting narrative, with each track its own chapter in the sprawling puzzle.

Available on limited edition cassette and digital format. The cassette version comes with a secret hidden track....
