Bricolage Podcast #46 - Leit Motif

It's raining here in Glasgow as we upload our June session. Its another clammy but wet night. That's nothing new for this part of the world. It's probably going to rain for at least 50% of summer. It usually does here.

Thankfully we've got just the right remedy for all your summer needs in the form of a new podcast from Leit Motif. A mellow and warm breeze of a mix that's full of vibrant colours and layer upon layer of radiant melodies. Just the right amount of electronica, house and woozy vocals combined together to make for a dreamy and hazy listen that is sure make your feet tap and your head bop.

Bricolage Podcast #29 : Loui Cleghorn (NYE Live Set)

We rumble on into 2018 with a bang as we bring you our first podcast of the year and it's no ordinary podcast either. We're proud to be able to bring you Loui Cleghorns live set from the secret NYE party thrown by Glasgow powerhouse label, Tribal Pulse. Loui decided to break from the norm of a straightforward DJ set and took the opportunity to showcase a chunk of his own material in different ways through hardware, loops and his own stems. It's a bold and brave move that pays major dividends.

Here's what Loui had to say about the ideas behind his live set

"The reason I do these sets is to do stuff I’ve never done before. In this case I wanted to start a set by taking elements of 4 or 5 of my own tunes and creating something new that I could play around with and use to dictate where the set went. There are a few tunes in here i haven’t come up with names for and that would be one of them. Besides that it’s a nice way for people to hear your new ideas without having to release them, or at least before you do.

The only hardware used in this set is a Livid Cntrl:R used to trigger stems, control effects and automate a few extra instruments on Ableton if I fancy jamming something out. I also use a Roland JDXi which can be synced to your main stems and loops on your DAW. I tend not to bother though as latency can be a bitch. Plus I feel it just sounds more authentic (and also way more fun) just to play the thing raw!

I performed this on new years eve over the bells at a party for Tribal Pulse whom I’d like to thank along with Bricolage for the opportunity to do this. You guys are awesome!"

Headroom 11 : Minerva presents "Founding Myths"

After a short break on the Headroom front we're back with a bang and a truly mesmeric and extensive mix session from Minerva. The Greek/Hungarian producer and DJ is in full on club mode as she takes you on a trip through some of the most recent additions to her expansive collection of music. There's an undeniably fresh feeling to the listening session due to the majority of the tracks being released this year. Minerva kicks off proceedings with a beautifully strange vocal piece from an unknown artist before launching into a rich variation of dancefloor ready house rhythms, stylistic melodic consistencies and plush pad swirls that are all laced with progressive tendencies. There's room for a flawless transition into some harder territory in the form of some grittier techno productions, although the overall deep vibe of the sounds on show remain at the core and then we find ourselves navigated back to the familiar hypnotic melodic elements from earlier but this time sandwiched in between them is some skewered rhythms, euphoric chords and lots of vocal cuts before we filter out of the mix on the same unknown acapella from the intro.

Bricolage Podcast #24 : Loui Cleghorn

Just over a year after his 2016 Headroom mix, Loui Cleghorn returns to the fray for our latest podcast. The swirling , lush, electronics and intricate melodies are back but this time they're backed up with a plethora of even brighter, emotional sounds . There's an almost filmic nature to elements of the mix as soaring string sections and pads take centre stage occasionally before retreating to let the rhythm take over once again. It's a powerful and fluid mix from a man with a finely tuned style and musical palate. Lots of layers, big synth lines, crescendos and an impressive flow make Augusts podcast a sublime piece of ear candy.

Oscurito "Eastern Philosophy" (bc028)

Eighteen months on from the release of his "Octopus" EP at the start of 2016, Oscurito, returns to Bricolage with fresh ideas, new philosophies and a whole new production skill set. The "Eastern Philosophy" EP sees the Glaswegian indulge his ambient side that bit more. 'Kunoichi' opens things up with a buzzing, calming drone, sparse keys, sumptuous synth work and some stunning string sections that slowly engulf your headspace before 'The Nihon Shoki' slowly flutters into view with yet more string arrangements and synths. This time they come backed up with carefully selected and perfectly placed percussive elements and a humming bassline. Then the deep vocals of "Find Your Centre" introduce us to the most danceable track on the EP. Out goes the overall ambient side of things and back in come those trademark bulky basslines, sliding perc work and psychedelic melodies to form a big, truly Eastern flavoured tech house special. It's been a pleasure to watch the evolution of Oscurito over the past year and a half and there's way more to come from a producer who's just starting to find his own sound.

The EP comes backed up with two remixes of "Find Your Centre". the first is an electro flavoured take on things from Dreamland Fantasy. Keeping all the main ingredients of the original at the fore and adding his own elements to create a fresh and engaging remix.

Minerva chooses to go down a more progressive route by manipulating the original percussion into her own bustling style and letting things slowly evolve in a repetitive and hypnotic fashion that harks back to the early days of that old school prog house feel of 2000's. Big kicks at the forefront to really drum things home.
