Fragile X and Esef "Static Control" (bc055)

Bricolage are proud to present a new split EP from the heart of Glasgow's underground as Fragile X and Esef offer up four bruising slabs of  bass driven techno and breakbeat. Both producers have dug deep into their respective sonic arsenals and retrieved the heavy artillery for this one.

Gritty, loose rhythms and gurgling basslines buzz around the opening track from Fragile X before alien bleeps appear and carry the track to it's conclusion. Next up, Esef, brings that trademark percussive punch and weighty bass movements that set the scene for a melodic explosion.

For the remixes, Esef tackles "Damage Control" head on and starts off with a dark and ominous tone that incorporates the original bassline into something that little bit more sinister before flicking the switch and dragging us feet first into an uplifting techno anthem.  To round things off, Fragile X travels into the static with a hiss, before being joined by compact breakbeats,  chopped up hi hats, warped bass samples and furious acid lines.

"Static Control" has been in the pipeline since late summer 2019 and we've been patiently sitting on it waiting to unleash it into the world. We hope you can agree that it's been worth the wait.

You can purchase "Static Control" direct from the link below or at our bandcamp.

Bricolage Podcast #43 - Minerva

Our March podcast is a special celebration of women in the electronic music scene and comes courtesy of Minerva. The Hungarian producer is using her platform, as one of our figureheads, on Bricolage to exhibit a mix of her female peers and influences and help raise awareness and support for gender parity in music and beyond.

"For me, IWD is always a very important day. It can sometimes feel like a constant uphill fight to be seen as an equal in the male dominated scenes of electronic music. However the balance is slowly shifting. The balance is key and we, as woman with creative drive, can and should expect to be given as much recognition for our contributions to the world of sound.

Fortunately, I have found a welcome home at Bricolage among some other very talented female musicians like Minimal_Drone*GRL, Bedless Bones, Sulevia and more. There, we are seen firstly and simply as producers and friends. There is no reference to male/female. We are all humans. Humans making music. Unfortunately, the music scenes I interact in my day to day life are sometimes not always as kind and welcoming. This landscape is slowly changing however. And ever year I feel big steps are being taken. This encourages me. I hope this continues and one day we have the equality we deserve."

As always you can stream the mix below or at our mixcloud.

Bricolage Podcast #38 : Sceadu

Sceadu has appeared briefly from the shadows to take the controls for our October podcast. The mysterious German artist has provided a dense mixture of Detroit Techno, electro and dub techno. Mechanical patterns, space signals, futuristic ambience and deep bass rumblings throughout. The session is mixed as a 50/50 split of vinyl and digital and spans an almost 30 year timeline from the classic early nineties era through to more current releases from the newer breed. There’s a curve ball thrown in for good measure along the way....

You can stream the mix below or at our mixcloud.

TRACK : Dämmerung
EP : Morgenlicht

3. Geisterstunde
4. Morgenlicht
5. Morgenlicht (Dreamland Fantasy remix)

Buy/Stream the EP in full exclusively @ the Bricolage bandcamp

"The 'Morgenlicht' EP is four audio slabs of acid/electro hybrids that are loaded with creativity, raw analogue power and an old school grittiness reminiscent of the experimental techno of the early 1990's. Acid bleeps and fuzzy basslines incorporated into intricate mechanical soundscapes that are complimented by meticulous drum work. The influences of the Detroit Techno era shine through on the EP but never threaten to engulf the overall sound and style that Arran Trax has tirelessly shaped for himself.

The concept behind the music was to 'capture that special atmosphere when you come out of a club and it's just starting to get light'.

We'd say Arran Trax has done that and more with this classy release that's perfect for peak time or that walk back from the club with your headphones on."

Bricolage Podcast #34 - Arran Trax

For our first podcast of the summer we've snagged a hefty slice of refined electronics from, a man very much in demand at the moment, Arran Trax.

We've got a brand new EP arriving at the end of this month from the Hamburg based producer known predominantly for his massively melodic house and disco excursions but with an undeterred love for all things acid and electro. His upcoming release on Bricolage sees him return to those roots in stunning fashion and we're excited to start unveiling some more of the sounds in the coming weeks.

In anticipation of his new release, Arran Trax, has provided Bricolage with a robust 70 minutes where he wears his influences firmly on his sleeve with a surging set of old school electro vibes, Detroit Techno grooves, acid waves and winding, complex structures weaved together with extensive track layering. A truly captivating set full of deep and cultured sounds that are perfect for the summer evenings that lie ahead.

An "Original Son"....

At the end of last month, Bricolage affiliate Suncastle released a mammoth full length LP on the fascinating Triplicate Records. "Original Son" is a 19 track electronic monster that acts as a sonic exhibit of what the Manchester producer is capable of conjuring up. We'll run you through our own track by track take on whats on offer in the album.

1. Vision Quest
The album opener starts things off with a blast. A melody soaked, broken beat epic.

2. Into The Trees
Plods into sight with a rumble and focuses more on this producers ability to create a slow burning atmosphere.

3. Carousel
Another slow tempo and deep bass that slowly gives way to a stuttering fun fair of chiptune sounds.

4. Low-Lands
A short upbeat funk based ditty.

5. Deer Archer
Carefully plucked melodics and a thumping kick carry this funk infused electronica gem from start to finish.

6. Nerikara and Tabasuko
More carefully portrayed melodics, this time with an Eastern flavour, and some playful sounds over a swift tempo.

7. Ley-Lines
Warm arpeggios and solid rhythmic patterns create an energetic number.

8. Sugar Cairn
Absorbing tones and textures that throw up sunshine vibes.

9. Dragon of Peat
An experimental interlude of sorts that leads into....

10. Forest Fire
A diverse and sonically challenging slice of electronica that never sits still.

11. Clive's Dream
Another short interlude, even more experimental than the last with bleeps and blips falling over each other in harmony.

12. Thorpe Cloud
Starts with what could be an almost trance like tone and slowly develops into a broken beat hybrid.

13. Treefortress
60 seconds of bright, ambient/glitch, sound design.

14. Friendly Bacteria
A rapid fire beat, warped bassline and a sumptuous ascending melody.

15. Sabilulungan
A beautifully constructed piece of nature themed ambient that conjures up images of a gleaming forest.

16. Ghosts in the Cabin
Field recordings and curious, haunting sound design.

17. Rabbit Dream
A perfect electro/8bit crossover that confidently bounces and sways along. Possibly my stand out track.

18. Drownhouse
The most calming track on the release. A quiet and ethereal slice of ambient that slows down the pace as we reach the end.

19. Under the Hills, Magic Remains
A superb closing track that somehow manages to take pretty much every musical ingredient from the album and cram it into 5 minutes. The precise way to close out a phenomenal release.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, "Original Son" is an expansive and eclectic body or work that shows a producer who is clearly in his element when given free reign to genre-smash and explore the many sounds that occupy his headspace.

Have a listen for yourself at the bottom of the page and grab a copy from the Triplicate Records bandcamp.

*EDIT: The folks over at Triplicate have been kind enough to offer up a few download codes for this phenomenal album.

In The Loop : Episode 26

It's been a while since our last ITL so we're starting off February with a new episode that takes a look at what a few artists on the roster have been up to recently.

THE OSCILLOSCOPE

Some "new" old material has surfaced on The Oscilloscope page as the Swiss based producer changes pace from his usual acid sound and revisits a gentler sound with some ambient material. There's plans for a conceptual release in the works so stay tuned to his account for more details soon.

-------------------------------------------------------------

BLUE NOTES

Fresh from his Tetrahedron album release on Bricolage at the end of last year, the young Glaswegian has kept his foot on the production pedal and continued to provide some excellent tracks for his followers. The latest offering being "Mnemonics". An atmospheric piece with some class ping pong style percussion littered throughout.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUBSEQUENT

"Revival of Interest" is a work in progress from the Dutch musician that is driven along by a strange, bubbling, melody, warped vocal, crisp, clean beats and a rumbling, sparse bassline.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BELIAL PELEGRIM

The ever prolific Californian is always at the forefront of consistency and never disappoints with his eclectic skills. Newest track "And The Sun Went Out In The Sky" is a prime example of his ability to carve out soaring ambient soundscapes alongside a tight backbone of experimental elements.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUNCASTLE

"Deep Archer" is the first track from an upcoming Suncastle LP on Triplicate Records. . It's a warm breeze of slightly wonky electronica. Upbeat basslines and fluttering melodies supply the depth in a superb all rounder that gives an insight what to expect when the release comes around. Free DL so no excuses not to dig in.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARRAN TRAX

To round off the episode we have a sprawling acid-electro hybrid gem from Arran Trax. Building off the base of an almost tribal rhythm it slowly grows and grows into a monster of a tune that never sits still. There's a sweet melodic break halfway through that pops up to say hello before it gives way to the return of sonic chaos. "Morgenlicht" is up there with my own personal favourites from the, Hamburg based, Scottish producer and I'm delighted to reveal that we've started dialogue on a Bricolage EP from the man himself over summer. Expect more acid....

Headroom 11 : Minerva presents "Founding Myths"

After a short break on the Headroom front we're back with a bang and a truly mesmeric and extensive mix session from Minerva. The Greek/Hungarian producer and DJ is in full on club mode as she takes you on a trip through some of the most recent additions to her expansive collection of music. There's an undeniably fresh feeling to the listening session due to the majority of the tracks being released this year. Minerva kicks off proceedings with a beautifully strange vocal piece from an unknown artist before launching into a rich variation of dancefloor ready house rhythms, stylistic melodic consistencies and plush pad swirls that are all laced with progressive tendencies. There's room for a flawless transition into some harder territory in the form of some grittier techno productions, although the overall deep vibe of the sounds on show remain at the core and then we find ourselves navigated back to the familiar hypnotic melodic elements from earlier but this time sandwiched in between them is some skewered rhythms, euphoric chords and lots of vocal cuts before we filter out of the mix on the same unknown acapella from the intro.

As always you can stream the mix below or at our mixcloud.

Bricolage Podcast #20 : The Jaffa Kid

For our latest podcast we delve into the past a little with The Jaffa Kid. The Newcastle native is an experienced head when it comes to production and mixing and has provided us with a special Motor City mix of his from "years ago" which incorporates all manners of Detroit techno and electro together with elements of ghetto, trip hop and vocal cuts. All in all it's a supremely danceable, uplifting session that presents a unique look at bygone days of electronic music.

Stream the mix below or over at our mixcloud.
