Bricolage : Retcon (Phase One)

On the 31st of August we mark our third anniversary as a label. In those three years we’ve worked with some fantastic artists and released what, we’d like to think is, some unique and special music along the way.

To celebrate entering into our fourth year we’ve managed to pool together a mammoth 20 track compilation containing a mixture of 10 artists from our current roster and 10 artists that are new to the label.

Titled “Retcon”, the compilation will be released on Friday the 31st August and as usual will showcase a wide variety of styles from the electronic sphere.

We’re excited to start unveiling the artists involved and some of the sounds from the release this week. We start be unveiling 5 members of our current roster that are contributing to "Retcon".

DEVRAS PLEXI

The Austin native returns to the fold with latest track "Today's Communities Collapse" which will be officially released as part of "Retcon". Listen below.

His latest musical wares were released on Bricolage earlier this year in the form of the "frequent inspirational chore" EP...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRAGILE X

Label head Fragile X has had a long period away from releasing his own productions over the course of 2018 so far but will reappear with a brand new drum n bass track titled "Res Ipsa Loquitur" on the compilation. You'll be able to hear more soon.

Be sure to check out his last EP on Bricolage below. "Insert Coins To Continue" was released back in May 2017....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LO-JACKER
Electronic noodler and all round melodic genius, Lo-Jacker, is also back in the fray and provides us with his recent electronica gem, "Aquarius" on the upcoming album. Listen below.

His "Live Stuff" EP was released on Bricolage at the start of October 2016. It's more than worth researching...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE JAFFA KID

The Jaffa Kid has that much desired ability to effortlessly produce both the rigid and celestial side of electronic music and has supplied a stunning new ambient track called "Simonetti" that will feature on the new release. All will be revealed soon.

Until then be sure to have a listen through his "In Orbit" EP that we released last March....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Loui previously released the aquatic tinged ambient house of "Waterworks" on Bricolage almost two years ago....

In The Loop: Episode 27

Our latest edition of In The Loop casts an eye (and ear) on the recent productions of another selection of producers from the roster.

NO ARRIVAL

Strange off kilter rhythms, odd sound design and laid back guitar....

A stark contrast in pace with rolling, scattered percussion, galloping bass and drips of acid.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INTERNATIONAL DEBRIS

"Verdant Sphinx" sees International Debris build a slow burning downtempo gem to lose yourself in....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALL BUTTONS IN

Some tense and moody experimental and industrial tinged electronica that clicks, growls and pulses...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUTE BRANCHES

"Obsolete Waterway" and "Creaky Nowhere BGM" have that signature Mute Branches lo-fi aesthetic. Drifting ambient soundscapes and maybe even a NES sample...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LO-JACKER

Melody is always the main ingredient of Lo-Jackers creations and "Aquarius" is no different. Chimes, bleeps, warm bass and delightful drum work.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JAFFA KID

Epic summer ambient soaked in nostalgia.....

Quixotic : Bricolage (Label Showcase)

Manchester based after party troupe "Quixotic" recently honoured Bricolage with a special mix consisting purely of material from our back catalogue. It spans a broad range of our techno infused releases and ranges from our early days to the present.

Here's what they had to say:

"Session 6 is a celebration for friends. The forward thinking Glasgow label, Bricolage, recently celebrated their second anniversary. Quixotic have been huge fans of the label since its inception. Label head, Fragile X, has tirelessly and consistently provided a seemingly endless stream of electronic pearls from musicians far and wide for fans to sink their teeth into. From humble beginnings to underground respect, Bricolage has developed over the last 24 months into an open platform for people that think that little bit differently when it comes to listening habits and production traits. Providing and producing ambient, glitch, electronica, IDM, techno and a bit of everything under the electronic umbrella.
To celebrate the more beat driven side of the Bricolage back catalogue, Quixotic resident "General Zero" has mixed together a bunch of his fave techno flavoured tracks released on the label."

The Jaffa Kid "In Orbit" (bc025)

The Jaffa Kids sound palette knows no bounds. One listen through his vast back catalogue of tracks and official releases will bring you a rare but consistent assemblage of many styles. The electronic sector is his home and he's more than comfortable in every room in the house. Just at ease banging out pumping techno beats as he is with slowing down the pace and bringing his curious and free flowing taste for ambient to the table. When you fill in the gaps between those two with old school influences like breaks, jungle, acid and IDM then you have a bunch of captivating and irresistible productions.

Having being late to the table we only discovered the music of The Jaffa Kid in 2016 and quickly got him on board as soon as we could before releasing his track "Experience" on our VA Volume 4 compilation last November. With previous releases on Expanding Electronic Diversity, Recycled Plastics and Retropublik to name a few, we're more than happy to have secured a full EP release from the diverse electronic wizard in the form of his new "In Orbit"

The EP itself is a nice 50-50 split of three tracks from late 2016/early 2017 and three previously unreleased tracks. All lovingly crafted on classic synths like the Nord Lead A1, Access Virus TI2 and more. The groundwork is laid down on the percussion side with a brew of all sorts from four to the floor tech, jungle rhythms and edgy break formations. Those beats are covered by a fusion of intelligent electronic compositions that encompass all manners of progressive techno, psychedelic tinged passages, ambient atmospherics, IDM tendencies and weaves of acid. There's a distinct 90's edge and influence coursing through the spheres of "In Orbit", that could almost channel it as a throwback to the early golden times of experimental electronic music, thus giving Jaffa Kids latest offering the feeling of a classic era release that's bleeding into modern times. EP. Influenced by the likes of Plastikman, Gerald Donald, John Carpenter and Robert Hood, it's a real treat for electronic music fans of all ages.

Full streaming and download is available below or at our bandcamp.

In The Loop : Episode 17

Episode 17 of In The Loop follows on from yesterdays post that looked at what the first half of the contributing artists from Volume 4 have been doing recently. This post focuses on the latest sounds and goings on from the second half of producers.

One look at the soundcloud page of 'Jaffa Kid' is enough to get an idea of the regularity of his output. A lot of people might think that regular output doesn't always mean quality output but if you listen through all the sounds that emanate from Dan Williams' bedroom studio you'd be very hard pushed to find a bad track. It's just a constant flow of high standard, intelligent electronic music. Of all the most recent productions, "Melgar" and "What You Can Do" are our personal favourites here at Bricolage. What's yours? Check out both those tracks below and head to Soundcloud for more.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'The Oscilloscope' is another producer that constantly churns out top grade electronic works. An artist with a solid backbone of finger drumming skills melded together with an ear for weird, gloopy sounds. "Acid Sorcery" sounds exactly like you think it does. Little acid stabs flirting in and out of a funk laden bassline.

"Crawling" has a squelchy feel to it's harmonies and synth work that overlap each other while a distinctly 80's influenced bassline plods along underneath it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Ra1n' recently uploaded an older track to his Soundcloud page. "Ceylon" was featured on a 2015 compilation for the Easy Summer Limited label. It's another exquisite piece of liquid drum n bass from the Russian producer. Full of ambient grooves, spotlight melodies and delicate percussion. Listen below and if you like what you hear head on over to beatport and grab a copy.

There's also a new episode of his beautiful Ambient Hour sessions to zone out with over on Mixcloud.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It takes one listen to the 'Octavia Bannon Clark' track from our Volume 4 compilation to sense that you're listening to someone with an eclectic mind. Her track "Heavy Construction" is a joyride through skittery beats and flip flopping bass work. The eclectic element comes to the fore even more so when you check out her Soundcloud page. There's a plethora of electronic sketches that vary from braindance, acid, 80s influenced numbers and jittery IDM. We're sharing the two most recent uploads tonight. "Moon Base Alpha" and "Zenith" both sound like they could have been lifted out of some abstract 80's video game. This sounds like a ridiculous situation but hear me out....... imagine if Warp Records somehow got commissioned to soundtrack the 80s.......this is what it would sound like. It's pure fun, playful vibes over very well thought out IDM structures.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Figurate' is currently putting the finishing touches to his debut EP, "There Are Places Other Than Here", that we're releasing here on Bricolage next month. But he's found the time to rustle up a strange brew in the form of his remix of Bjorks 'Mutual Core'. Unrushed ambient organs and that unmistakable voice slowly turn to dust under a simply insane hardcore infused drum pattern before reappearing again to say goodbye.

'An Exist Strategy' is confirmed as the opening track of his imminent EP and it's dark, micro glitch music full of meticulous, ever twisting drums and vivid bass movements.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Meat Loops" sounds are hard to describe and I mean that in the best way possible. Amid all the coded and weird titles lies a diverse range of short, strange little electronic scenes that all each have their own distinct style but also manage to have the signature Meat Loops feel about them. We've shared a few of the newest tracks below.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last but not least, the elusive 'Mister Left'. His track "This Is Your Captain Speaking" closed out our compilation in fine style, A hypnotic, high energy electronic tool with a simple sounding but very complex rhythm base, sporadic and squidgy keys that fall out to allow a sarcastic pilot sample to appear before the journey kicks back in with a thud and an acid bassline. There's now a remix of the track available by Bricolage resident "Roy Or Bison?" that utilizes the heavier elements of the original and cuts out the extended pilot sample in favour of a more straight forward, no nonsense electro acid affair.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you haven't already then be sure to check out the latest compilation featuring all these producers and more on either bandcamp or Soundcloud. Both links below.

BRICOLAGE : VA VOLUME 4 (bc020)

Today we released Volume 4 of our various artists compilation project and it's another selection of, unique and eclectic, producers hand picked from across the globe coming together on one release that's brimming with a collection of intriguing and engaging sonic adventures. Each track plays its own important part as an individual component but also flourishes as part of the bigger picture in what proves to be a captivating digital landscape. A spectrum of melodies, immersive textures and an assortment of rhythms that drift between electronic experimentation, flat out techno, glitch movements, drum n bass and back again. The journey starts off with some vivid, trippy dub and dark ambient before moving into more beat based territory and a deep, woozy, resonating hybrid of bustling electronica, ambient techno, IDM and some rigid lo-fi tech frequencies. There's a diversion off path in the form of drum n bass before the trip continues and we leap into the most substantial experimental part full of intelligent drum work and dense, unpredictable musical sketches that collide into one another before finishing on a warped, techno/electronica composition.

A massive thank you goes out to everyone who contributed and made the release possible.

As always the release is free download or "pay what you want" and can stream or grab a copy of the compilation from the embed below or at our bandcamp.

Introducing The Collective 42-44

On the 14th of November we release Volume 4 in the series of our various artists compilation. It's set to be our most beat driven release to date. We've assembled another batch of talented producers from around the globe that create some fantastic sounds. Over the net few weeks we'll be introducing you to all of them. Tonight we start off with The Jaffa Kid, Ix Prospectum and Guido.

42. THE JAFFA KID

The Jaffa Kid hails from Newcastle in the north of England. His output is full of catchy melodies that emanate from dusty synths with enough droning electronic weirdness to keep the music menu fresh. It's bedroom electronic music at it's purest. He has released music on various labels throughout 20 years of button pushing including but not limited to Recycled Plastics, Expanding Electronic Diversity and Retropublik.  His musical influences range through an eclectic taste from the likes of John Carpenter to Tangerine Dream.

43. IX PROSPECTUM

Ix Prospectum is the musical project of Alessio Circi. Born in Berlin and currently living in Rome, he started releasing music under the Ix Prospectum moniker in January 2013 and his productions are a mix of traditional elements that are shaped by his surroundings, acute experimental textures and tight percussion. His music is free from genre stereotype and hard to pigeonhole but it's as sharp, intelligent and enjoyable as they come.

44. GUIDO

Guido is a young electronic producer and DJ from Portugal. We're huge fans of the sounds he's churning out. He's a master at effortlesssly switching from the melodic side of the scale to the darker heavier side.

"I am Portuguese, born in Lisbon. I was born in 1992 and am currently living in Madeira Island. I started DJing 2 years ago and producing in August this year. I basically began collecting electronic music from the age of 12. What I look for when producing is doing out-of-the-box stuff but still easy enough to appeal (I hope). I am trying to cover as many styles possibles and no creation is remotely similar from the previous. I strive to create powerful meaningful music to dance to, my own identity, my ideals inspired from all the artists that gave me the musical knowledge I possess today."
